About Calvin Helin

Mr. Helin is a best selling author, international speaker, entrepreneur, lawyer, and activist for self-reliance. He is a member of the Tsimshian Nation from the community of Lax Kw’alaams (on the Northwest coast of B.C). He is the son of a hereditary Chief, a practicing lawyer, and entrepreneur. Mr. Helin is President and CEO of Eagle Group of Companies, LLC. He is also President of the Native Investment and Trade Association, and is a director of the Vancouver Board of Trade, GeoScience BC, and the Canada-China Resource Development Foundation.

 

In addition to numerous national distinctions, Mr. Helin was recipient of the top “40 Under 40” awards for both British Columbia and nationally for Canada. Recently, he was Chairman of a highly successful Aboriginal trade delegation to China, and is working diligently to establish an innovative business model to promote long-term benefits to Aboriginal people from natural resource development.

 

Mr. Helin is the author of several publications relating to law, Aboriginal business, and associated issues. With the release of his (now five times) best-selling book, Dances with Dependency: Out of Poverty through Self-Reliance, he has developed an international reputation. His new book,

The Economic Dependency Trap: Breaking Free to Self-Reliance was released in October 2010.

 

Mr. Helin is an Ambassador for SOS Children's Village. In addition, in 2002, he founded the Shudokan Karate and Education Society and instructs Goju-Ru karate—providing free martial arts lessons to poor inner-city children as a way of teaching them discipline, manners, self-respect and other important life lessons.
